Seeds and Plants are Selling Out—But Here’s Where You Can Still Get Them

For those seeking a useful way to spend their time during social distancing—or anyone simply interested in forging a deeper connection with their homes—HB has launched Home Love, a series of daily tips and ideas to make every minute indoors more productive (and gratifying!).

Every year in early spring, people start buying seeds. But this year was a little different. After the national emergency was declared in mid-March, seed and plant sales skyrocketed as people turned to gardening in what felt like record numbers. And maybe no wonder: It’s also a family-friendly way to get outdoors and make productive use of your space—whether you have a big yard or just a planter box on your deck.

“We’ve experienced a level of interest like I’ve never seen before,” says George Ball, chairman of The Burpee Company. “We sold more seeds in March than at any other time in our 144-year history.” Many other seed and plant retailers also report 2 to 3 times their normal sales volume, or increases of 250% in a matter of days!

What’s everybody buying? Flower sales have increased—but it’s but mostly vegetable seeds and plants such as tomatoes, peppers, and beans. “People are planning out an assortment of edibles for their space,” says Kelly Funk, president of J & P Park Acquisitions, Inc., which includes Park Seed. “It’s therapeutic to dig in the dirt and focus on something else right now, and it’s rewarding.”福彩便民中心开机号 Plus, during a global pandemic, having your own food supply is more appealing than ever.

福彩便民中心开机号While some local nurseries are closed and the usual go-to retail sites are sold out of many gardening products, online seed and plant retailers are going strong. Garden companies have added staff and shifts to accommodate demand, while instituting policies to keep employees healthy. Some companies have run out of specific items, say, a particular type of tomato, but the good news is that there’s absolutely no shortage of seeds and plants overall. It’s simply taking longer to process and ship orders with the unprecedented three-fold increase in interest (so, read any announcements on the company website to know what to expect if you do order!).
